Our August market report is out. Here's what caught our eye:

Fine wine indices edged higher in July, with the Liv-ex 50 and Liv-ex 100 both up +0.3%. Modest, but a welcome sign after a quiet start to summer.

California and Champagne had a cracking month, and the Rhône rebounded after June's weaker showing. Harlan led the way in California, Dom Pérignon and Cristal Rosé topped the sparkling charts, and in the Rhône, Château Rayas remained king while Vieux Télégraphe quietly closed the gap.

Here at Vinum, Burgundy was once again our biggest market, with significant volumes of Roumier and Méo-Camuzet changing hands, followed by Bordeaux and Champagne.

Elsewhere, we look at the extreme heat and drought reshaping this year's harvest, from record-early picking in Rioja to Champagne growers applying to start before the official date. Plus: Hong Kong wine imports up over 20% in value in H1 2026, and why China's low per-capita consumption may be its biggest opportunity yet.

An unforgettable tasting discovering Alvina Pernot's 2025 releases with our UK team.

Alvina, granddaughter of Paul Pernot, is part of a new wave of young winemakers in Burgundy and crafts supremely elegant, refined and tensile whites that are very much in line with modern palates.

The team was captivated by the clarity and focus across the range. Lean, precise, and brimming with inner perfume. These are wines that reward patience and proper cellaring.

Welcome to the July edition of the Vinum Weekender. As summer reaches its height, we have five pieces for you this month.

Steve Mcneill uncovers San Sebastian's finest pintxos bars, beyond the city's 19 Michelin stars. Matthew Hemming MW shares three tips for building a wine collection, none of which involve buying a single bottle, then takes fourteen vintages of Kumeu River through a Chardonnay vertical. Miles Davis rounds up a quiet June in the fine wine market, and previews Opus One's keenly anticipated 2023 vintage, scored 96 points ahead of its September release.

The UK team tasting the latest vintage of Opus One, the 2023. Beautiful wine from a great year for Napa, look out for the release on the first Monday of September, it's one Opus fans won't want to miss.

Presented by Charlie Matthews, Export Director for the estate, at 67 Pall Mall this week. A blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot and 1% Malbec, aged nineteen months in French oak. Our resident MW, Matthew Hemming, awarded it 96 points, citing its blackcurrant intensity, fine silky tannins and an elegant, lifted finish.

New Zealand isn't where our Journal usually goes looking for Chardonnay, but a 14-bottle vertical of Kumeu River, spanning 2006 to 2023, made the case.

Founded in 1944 by the Brajkovich family, the estate found its focus when Michael Brajkovich MW returned from three years studying winemaking in Burgundy. Hand harvesting, whole bunch pressing, 11 months on the lees; the technique is pure Côte de Beaune. The result carries a clarity and vibrancy that's distinctly its own.

Standout of the tasting: Hunting Hill 2015, 95/100. Melted-butter richness, vivid and satin-textured.
