EN PRIMEUR 2021 BORDEAUX

The Campaign
2021 Bordeaux En Primeur
Everyone loves a soundbite but 2021 resists easy descriptions and refuses to fit into convenient off-the-peg vintage categories. What can we expect from the successful 2021s?

  • Pure and vivid fruit that is delicate but without any lack of intensity or ripeness and held in high definition by its acidity.
  • Modest alcohol levels recalling the wines of the 1980s – 13.5% is the exception and many great wines do not break 13%.
  • Structure that matches 2018/19/20 in terms of analysis – IPT tannins levels, etc – despite the wines feeling lighter, more supple and having less alcohol.
  • Truly outstanding dry whites, possibly the finest examples we’ve ever tasted en primeur.
  • High degrees of minerality, expressed as a tangy and refreshing salinity in both reds and whites.
“The top properties turned out gorgeous, classically built wines that will absolutely thrill readers who appreciate freshness and energy. Restrained alcohols and mid-weight structures will remind readers of Bordeaux pre-2000s. The best wines offer a striking combination of old-school classicism with modern-day precision”
- Antonio Galloni
“What is clear is that, were the 2021s transposed to the decade of the 1990s, they would be considered the product of a superb vintage.”
- William Kelley

Ordering En Primeur 2021 Bordeaux
How to order? - it’s good to talk
Wine is complicated enough and en primeur has more than enough potential for confusion, so our aim is to make ordering the new vintage as simple as possible.
Before the releases
  • If you have favourite chateaux you’re keen to secure or a wish list of wines, just drop a line to your account manager or usual Vinum contact. They can manage the list, liaise with our buyers to ensure everyone knows your interest and alert you as soon as your choices are available.
  • You may have interest in the vintage but feel that a little advice or guidance could be of use – even if just to knock ideas around or use us as a sounding board, do get in touch. Everyone at Vinum likes to talk about wine a little more than is perhaps healthy and even if you are usual contact doesn’t have the answer to a specific query, there is sure to be one of the team who does so. We’d be pleased to guide you towards wines to suit your palate, cellar or budget, or to help whittle down a long list to a more focused selection.
During the releases
  • We are currently doing our early prep work, in order to be able to get offers out as quickly as possible as the wines are released. If you have pre-advised your account manager, they will contact you as quickly as they can. Should an offer catch your eye during the course of the releases, the best thing to do is to contact your account manager to place an order.
  • The offers we send are being designed to present all the relevant information as clearly as possible, to help you make your decision. This includes showing a range of critics’ scores and price comparisons with other vintages. Where a wine gets a big ‘thumbs up’ from the Vinum team we will make this as clear as possible – highlighting those releases that we whole heartedly recommend and are most likely to be putting into our personal cellars. Doubtless, your account manager will make further recommendations, specific to you, during the campaign.
  • Being able to select different bottling formats is one of the great advantages of buying en primeur – maybe you want half bottles for mid-week consumption or grand 6-litre imperials for future celebrations. Our offers will set out the various options for each wine. Please let your account manager know at the point of ordering if you would like your wine in formats other than standard 75cl bottles as it may not be possible to amend your order at a later date.
Allocations
Bordeaux is the world’s largest fine wine region with individual chateaux bottling huge quantities each year. Chateau Pontet Canet alone can produce some 20,000 cases of its grand vin - nigh-on a quarter of a million bottles! In the vast majority of cases there is plenty of wine to go around but there will also be certain small-scale or in-demand estates that need to be allocated each year. In addition, 2021 yielded slightly less wine than an average year.
Where wines need to be allocated we seek to do this as transparently, fairly and quickly as possible. There are no hard and fast rules to this process but, in simple terms, we will seek to acknowledge our best customers support of Vinum with allocations of the most sought-after wines.
As ever, the best way to negotiate this process is to have a conversation with your account manager if you would like to buy wines that are likely to be allocated – 1st growths, top right bank wines and anything receiving potentially outstanding scores from the critics being the usual suspects for allocation. Sometimes we might need to delay confirming allocations whilst we work to acquire sufficient stock to fulfil demand. In these situations we will endeavour to get back to you as quickly as possible and your account manager will be able to update you as necessary.
In summary, as the old ad went, It’s good to talk. If 2021 en primeur is on your radar, please get in touch and let us know. We’ll be pleased to keep you updated throughout the campaign, supplying as much information as you need via whichever communications channel you prefer – Skype, WhatsApp, WeChat and others are all possible in addition to conventional E-mail and even the telephone.
We look forward to hearing from you.
